In contract interiors, an upholstery fabric must balance appearance, comfort and long-term performance. Durability, flame-retardant requirements and ease of maintenance should be considered alongside texture and colour. Consistent quality and reliable availability are equally important, helping project teams move smoothly from specification and sampling through production and future replacement.
An abrasion result is useful, but it should not be considered in isolation. The right upholstery fabric depends on frequency of use, seating construction, maintenance and the demands of each environment. Hospitality and workplace settings may require higher performance than lightly used residential spaces. Physical samples and technical data should therefore be reviewed together before a fabric is specified.
Flame-retardant performance should be considered as part of the complete upholstery system. Fabric, foam, backing, adhesives and furniture construction can all influence test results. For contract projects, the required standard should be confirmed early, with the complete assembly tested where necessary. Fabrics can be developed or treated for specific requirements, subject to construction and testing.
A successful material palette is built through relationships between colour, texture, scale and light. Fabrics should be considered alongside flooring, timber, metal and other interior finishes rather than selected in isolation. Reviewing samples within the intended space helps designers understand how materials respond to natural and artificial light, creating interiors that feel balanced, coherent and purposeful.
